L'ÉTAPE DU TOUR DE FRANCE 2023 IN THE HEART OF THE LEGEND!
July 9th 2023
The 31st edition of L'Étape du Tour de France was a day to remember for all the participants, who tackled a 157-kilometre challenge with an elevation gain of 4,100 metres between Annemasse and Morzine, on the roads of Haute-Savoie. Riding under the glorious sun, the whole bunch lived the experience of a lifetime on the course awaiting the pro peloton in stage 14 of the Tour de France, due to take place on next Saturday, 15 July.
16,000 entrants in the 31st edition of L'Étape du Tour de France, held between Annemasse and Morzine
Artus Jaladeau (FRA) and Martina Sáblíková (CZE) come out on top
92 nationalities on the start line and 45% of first-timers
Biathletes on the French national team crack the top 300
A shining accomplishment for amateurs and great champions alike
The finish of the 31st edition of L'Étape du Tour de France was packed with clenched fists, arms raised in triumph and sunglasses that barely concealed flowing tears, as cries of anger, joy and relief pierced the air. It took the riders five, six, seven and up to more than ten hours to complete this larger-than-life challenge.
Rolling out of Annemasse at the crack of dawn, the field set course for the Col de Saxel —a gentle start with an average gradient of 4% to warm up. Following a fast descent, the road bent towards the sky again with a succession of three category 1 passes: the Col de Cou (7 km at 7.7%), the Col de Feu (5.9 km at 7.9%) and, last but not least, the grinding Col de la Ramaz (13.9 km at 7.1%).
As the course tightened the screws on the participants, many raised their heads and sought respite in the exceptional views of Haute-Savoie, first with Lake Geneva and a bit later with the snow-capped and majestically lit Mont Blanc, adding to this unique experience on roads entirely closed to traffic. The long, hard slog up the Col de Ramaz was also a ride down memory lane, with signs erected as a tribute to all the great champions of the Tour de France, making riders feel like they were pushing the pedals right next to Bobet, Anquetil, Hinault, Merckx, Bahamontes, Fignon, Indurain and many more. What a morale boost!
ARTUS JALADEAU AND MARTINA SÁBLÍKOVÁ TAKE THE SPOILS
The Frenchman Artus Jaladeau, head and shoulders above the rest, crossed the finish line in 4 h 31′28″ and added his name to the list of winners, as did the Czech Martina Sáblíková, who wrapped up the women's race in 5 h 19′39″. Yet, in the heart of the peloton, time is often an afterthought, just a way of keeping track and staying on the right course. From battle-hardened veterans to rookies (45% of firsttimers), riders from every corner of the planet (92 nationalities represented, with foreigners accounting for 30% of the field), they all shared the same simple goals: crossing the finish line, getting their hands on the medal, making fond memories, having fun… and earning bragging rights.
A CHALLENGE FOR EVERY RIDER
Delphine Reinert came from Manosque for her baptism of fire in L'Étape du Tour de France. "It was tough, but riding on closed roads is a real treat", she pointed out. "The atmosphere is out of this world. Sometimes you feel like you're racing in the Tour de France, with the locals coming out to cheer us on and playing their part to perfection."
Anthony came from Quimper and can't stop smiling after just over 9 hours of effort. I've been dreaming of doing L’Etape du Tour de France for years," explains the Breton rider. I've given myself the means to succeed by following the training plans suggested by the organisers. I listened to all the advice from the pros, particularly on diet and how to manage the last few days before the start. I didn't want to regret anything. On the descent to the finish, I thought about it all again and it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for this unique experience."
In the heart of the peloton, Damien Lustre is one of the 300 "Runners of the Heart" who signed up for the event to raise funds for the charity Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque. "The course is amazing, and pinning on a charity race number really fills it with meaning", explained the man from the Pas-de-Calais department. "When you start to run out of steam, it makes sense."
ATHLETES RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
The sun was near its zenith when the riders tackled the final hurdle, the hors catégorie Col de Joux Plane, an 11.6 km climb with an average gradient of 8.5% and sections north of 12% (note that the timed section ended at the top of the Col de Joux Plane to avoid any risks on the descent to Morzine). A few household names from French sport joined the ranks of the amateurs. One of them was the 2006 Olympic downhill gold medallist, Antoine Dénériaz, another "Runner of the Heart", who completed the course in 7 h 27. The biathletes on the French national team also acquitted themselves honourably, with Loïs Habert (5 h 12) in the top 100 and Fabien Claude (5 h 24), Émilien Jacquelin (5 h 33) and Antonin Guigonnat (5 h 34) between 200th and 300th place. The star motorcycle rider Loris Baz stopped the clock at 6 h 31. Tom Lecomte, a French triathlete touted as one of the best in the world over long distances, staged a heart-warming comeback after sustaining grievous injuries in a road accident about a year ago. His doctors had told him he would be lucky if he could walk again, but today, he pinned on a race number for the first time and finished the event in 6 h 12!
L'ÉTAPE DU TOUR DE FRANCE: A MAGNET FOR CYCLISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Along with the champions, the finish area was packed with amateurs, some from far-flung places. Anders Tonsager from Norway, who completed the course in over 6 h 30, could barely take his eyes off his third L'Étape du Tour de France medal. "Wow, it was hot and the last climb was tough", he panted. "We're not used to this in Norway. Skiing is our cup of tea, but it's not really the best way to train for an event like this one. But it's awesome. I even stopped to take some pictures and send them to Norway, and now everyone is jealous!"
Next Saturday, it will be the turn of the pro peloton of the Tour de France to tackle this course. Whether they are standing on the side of the road or glued to their screens, the pro race will pack an intense emotional punch for the participants in the 31st edition of L'Étape du Tour de France, with their finisher's medal around their neck and their minds full of exhilarating memories!

For decades, the greatest names in cycling have climbed the Col du Galibier, the Col de la Croix de Fer and the ascent to Alpe d'Huez. This 30th edition of L’Étape du Tour de France is no exception. Among the cycling enthusiasts in the heart of the peloton, some famous athletes will also be present: Óscar Pereiro, the winner of the 2006 Tour de France, Olympic and Paralympic champions, and athletes from other disciplines who have come to take up a veritable challenge...
Key points:
• The benchmark amateur cycling event in Europe and the only one on closed roads will take place on 10 July: 167 km and 4,700 m of D+ between Briançon and Alpe d'Huez
• Óscar Pereiro winner of the 2006 Tour de France
• Dutchman Bas Tietema and Austrian Olympic champion Anna Kiesenhofer
• The French biathlon team: Émilien Jacquelin, Anthonin Guigonnat, Fabien Claude and their coach Vincent Vittoz
• Three Paralympic champions: Alexis Hanquinquant, Alexandre Lloveras et Jiri Jezek
Among the riders expected to participate, The Netherlands' Bas Tietema from the Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB team should ride at the sharp end of the race. Observers with a keen eye will also recognize two familiar faces from the cycling world. Spaniard Óscar Pereiro, winner of the 2006 Tour de France and Trek ambassador and mountain bike icon, and renowned YouTuber and Škoda/Julbo ambassador Kilian Bron will take in L’Étape du Tour de France experience. Olympic road race gold medallist in Tokyo, Austrian Anna Kiesenhofer, is the clear favourite. But the Lotto Soudal cyclist might have to keep an eye on another Olympic champion. Multiple Olympic Champion in speed skating (6 medals at the Olympic Games, including three gold, but also 11 world titles), the Czech Martina Sablikova demonstrated her bike racing skills when she won L’Étape Czech Republic by Tour de France 2021.
BIATHLETES FROM THE FRENCH TEAM IN FORCE Several French national biathlon team members also wanted to take up the challenge. Silver medallist in the mixed and relay events at the Beijing Winter Olympics, Émilien Jacquelin, has dreamed of participating in L’Étape du Tour de France. "Cycling is part of me," explains the double world champion in pursuit (2020, 2021). I was born on 11 July, and I have always been fascinated by the Tour de France. I was a cyclist until I was 15 before I opted for biathlon. But I still enjoy riding a bike. I'm thrilled to participate in L’Étape du Tour de France 2022. The course is tremendously difficult. So, I have to be humble, work hard, and we'll see. I haven't ridden much, just 1,800 km, but I'm counting on my physical qualities. I am really looking forward to participating in this atmosphere with this incredible peloton." He will be joined by the 2021 world champion in the mixed singles relay, Antonin Guigonnat, silver medallist in Beijing in the relay, Fabien Claude and coach Vincent Vittoz, world champion in cross-country skiing in 2005. "When Émilien asked me last winter if he could take part in L’Étape du Tour, I told him OK, but you have to get me a bib," laughs Vittoz. And that's how it started with Antonin and Fabien, who joined us. I have prepared myself because this will be the longest thing I have ever done. You can't just go there. I should have already ridden between 4 500 and 5 000 km before the race. I know the Galibier well because I have already done it on ski wheels. I like the terrain, but I would have preferred to have a 10% gradient than a 5%."
SEVERAL PARALYMPIC CHAMPIONS AT THE START
The parasport world will be represented by prominent ambassadors. Paralympic champion in Tokyo, four-time world champion and undefeated for the last three years on the para-triathlon circuit, Alexis Hanquinquant, will be on the starting line in Briançon. The Tour de France is legendary", confides the Norman. “It makes people dream! I will be doing a training camp with the French para-triathlon team during this period, but I will make a return trip because I am so happy to participate in L’Étape du Tour de France with this public dimension. To participate amongst a large crowd and all these cyclists will inevitably be transcendent. Paralympic champion in Tokyo in the road pursuit in tandem with Corentin Ermenault, Alexandre Lloveras, who is visually impaired, will also take on this challenge. A Škoda-backed athlete, former Czech cyclist and Paralympian on the road and track, Jiri Jezek has won medals at the last four Paralympic Games, including six Paralympic titles.
BIG HEARTED CHAMPIONS WITH MÉCENAT CHIRURGIE CARDIAQUE
Since 2016 with 20 riders, the presence of Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque on L'Étape du Tour de France has continued to grow. This year, 264 riders will participate, wearing a red and white jersey, in the colours of the association, whose aim is to enable children with heart malformations from underprivileged countries to undergo surgery in France. Each rider obtained their solidarity bib by raising more than €750 in donations from friends and family. More than €144,000 has been collected, which will pay for the operations of twelve children with heart defects. The association will also have a presence in the start village on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 July in Briançon!

As the first step in the "Maillot Jaune" adventure, Santini, the official partner entrusted with making the distinctive jerseys of the Tour de France, has designed the inaugural collection. Its technical characteristics are identical to those of the jerseys awarded to the leader of each classification. Santini's collection relies on clean lines steeped in ultramarine and petrol green… with a dash of yellow, of course. In addition to the jerseys, Santini offers a complete set of apparel, including shorts, a base layer, a technical T-shirt, a jacket, a cardigan, gloves and even caps.
Through the creation of the first range of the "Maillot Jaune" universe, the Italian designer embraces its role as a trailblazer with gusto, paving the way for other manufacturers who share the same values to come on board in upcoming seasons with products that run the whole gamut of cycling: technical or leisure clothing, cycling material and measurement tools, miscellaneous accessories. Everything you need to channel the spirit of the Tour.
Yann Le Moënner, Managing Director at ASO:
"The goal of the "Maillot Jaune" range is to offer all cyclists technical apparel that epitomises a free frame of mind and embodies the values of the Tour de France. This equipment is designed for fans who go out riding on their own, in a group or with their clubs and want to perform in all seasons while wearing optimal and resolutely modern material. We are especially proud of our first collection, developed with Santini, which marries boldness and elegance. It is universal and timeless. We hope that it will open the door for other clothing manufacturers to join the team very soon."

March 29th 2022
The world’s largest sports community partners with the world’s most iconic cycling event to create storytelling hub, bring race action to life and bolster the ecosystem of women’s cycling.
Strava, the leading social platform for over 99 million athletes and the largest sports community in the world, today announced a three-year partnership with the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. The long-term partnership enables Strava to develop new and unique experiences for its global community of athletes to follow the excitement of each stage of the race.
For the first time ever, the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift will come to life inside the Strava app with a content hub dedicated to telling the story of the riders through their daily activity uploads and photos. Fans will be able to go inside Segments and relive the day's top performances, energizing and motivating their own athletic pursuits.
The inaugural Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in 2022 will be the most significant women’s race in the world and Strava is supporting the event to bolster the ecosystem of women’s cycling and create engaging new experiences for fans and racers alike.
The Tour de France and Strava have enjoyed a longstanding shared history predating this official partnership. This partnership and future events on Strava will let more riders, including the women’s peloton, engage with cyclists around the world in new ways and inspire cyclists regardless of gender, age or where they live.”
Yann le Moënner, CEO of Amaury Sport Organisation, added: “We are very glad and honoured to partner with Strava, the largest sports community in the world.Strava will help cycling fans to get closer to the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift and discover new routes for future challenges inspired by the world's greatest riders. We share with Strava a passion for cycling and work together for its development for both men and women.”
Lauren Stephens, reigning US National Road Race Champion, team EF Education-TIBCO-SVB, commented:
“We're continuing to see more equality in the support and atmosphere that's being developed around women's racing and I think it is going in the right direction. For the last several years we've had single day events but now we're getting a full stage race with the iconic Champs-Élysées experience. I started riding before Strava existed, then joined in 2013 and it slowly just grew into something I was kind of obsessed with. To mix up my training, I find new segments in areas where I want to go, and use them as motivation to push myself for a spot on the leaderboard. Sponsor support from companies like Strava makes this possible, and improves the race for the riders. I feel more respected and validated, and that brings more pressure, in a good way, to perform and make the racing exciting for the people and the brands that are supporting you and creating more opportunity. This competition is my primary race focus for the season and the centerpiece of my race calendar.”
Audrey Cordon Ragot, 6x National French Champion, team Trek-Segafredo, added:“It is exciting to see Strava supporting women’s cycling with this partnership because it is the platform at the heart of professional and amateur cycling. I use Strava every single day to follow my training throughout the year, and Strava is also my reference to follow what my teammates and competitors are doing.Strava provides a unique and authentic way to share my daily life as a professional and it is where I connect with fans who follow me and support me. Being able to wear a distinctive jersey at the Tour is a dream that will become a reality for some of us, and hopefully for me!”
Strava’s partnership also includes supporting L'Étape du Tour de France, the one-day, 16,000 amateur rider mass start event held in France on July 10, which will use a route raced by the professional cyclists in the The Tour de France the following week.

Cancellation of the 2021 edition
May 20th 2021
After several months of not being able to meet up and explore the cycling routes of France, we have been preparing to get on our bikes in the hinterland of Nice on 4 July. But although lockdown is beginning to ease, the conditions necessary for the Étape du Tour de France to go ahead as normal and for us to be able to gather together to celebrate our passion for cycling will still not be satisfied. This is why, in agreement with the city of Nice, and after having studied the recommendations of the Alpes-Maritimes administration, we have decided to cancel the Étape du Tour de France 2021.
You will be entirely reimbursed for the cost of your bib and any options you may have signed up for before 15 June. We will do everything we can to offer you the chance to preregister for the 2022 edition of the Étape du Tour de France.
Alongside the city of Nice and our partners, we would like to thank you kindly for your trust and the efforts you have made to be in Nice this 4 July.
We will see you in 2022, when we promise we will celebrate our reunion in style at one of the most beautiful stages of the biggest cycling race in the world.
See you very soon!

Building on their historical La Vuelta partnership, Shimano and A.S.O. now extend their collaboration on Le Tour de France, prestigious classics such as Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Flèche Wallonne, Paris-Tours and also events such as L’Etape du Tour de France and Roc d’Azur.

With Shimano celebrating it’s centenary year in 2021, the partnership will see the brand leveraging 20 years ofneutral support experience and know-how to support all riders in selected A.S.O. races, no matter which drivetrain brand they use, helping them to get their bikes operating at the optimum level. The iconic blue of Shimano will adorn the neutral support cars in all A.S.O. World Tour, Continental and Women’s races, offering all riders assistance to get back on the road as quickly as possible in the event of a crash or mechanical issue.
Taizo Shimano, Executive Vice President said “In the one hundredth year of our existence we are very excited to start a new chapter in our sports history. We are proud to announce a partnership to support the A.S.O.’s events with neutral support. That means we will be providing first-class support to riders at A.S.O. events to get them back on the road and back in the race.
“Shimano’s role is to inspire people to participate in sports and to keep bicycles running at their best. The vital neutral support role, especially at cycling’s most high-pressurized race – and also at the world’s most-watched sporting event – will allow us to do just that.
“Working with A.S.O. will allow Shimano to provide more support to the sport and more support to athletes to help them perform at the top level.
“As a company we take great pride in the quality of work that the thousands of global Shimano dealers carry out. This partnership with A.S.O. is the best example of the service that they provide. Not only do we hope this partnership will inspire a new generation of people to ride their bikes more often, but we hope to inspire people to trust in our product quality.”
Yann Le Moënner- Managing Director of Amaury Sport Organisation: "We are incredibly pleased to have extended our partnership with a player as innovative as Shimano. Partnering up on all of our professional and amateur cycling events with a family business and pioneer in the cycling world testifies to our commitment to offering excellent support to athletes as well as all of the cyclists involved in our events.
The innovation and consistent level of excellence provided by the brand over its 100 years of existence make Shimano a crucial player in world and everyday cycling and a brand that we are proud to be associated with."
Edouard Cassignol, Public Events Director, declared: "We are very glad to have Shimano as a new partner on our road cycling events (the Etape du Tour in particular) and on our all-terrain events with the Roc d'Azur. The Étape du Tour de France 2021 will take place on 4 July!
November 1st 2020
The 30th edition of the Étape du Tour de France will take place on 4 July 2021 in Nice. The amateurs will cover 175kms and a little more than 3,600 m of positive altitude difference in the Nice backcountry on the same course that saw Julian Alaphilippe ride to victory on last August 30th.
The valleys along the route were hit hard by storm Alex a few weeks ago and the roads have not yet been rebuilt. The beautiful villages of the Vesubia valley will show the scars of this disaster for many years to come. But in order for life to start again little by little, we have decided, together with the city of Nice, to use the original course meant for the Étape du Tour de France.
If you registered for the 2020 edition, your entry remains a priority. If you cannot participate, we will reimburse you for the amount of your bib and the options you may have chosen. We will contact you at the beginning of the year (just before the official opening of registration) to find what you would like to do.
If you are not registered but would like to ride on this fantastic course on July 4th, 2021, you can pre-register now to be informed if there are places available to participate.
Taking into account the current public health situation, that is continually pushing the Government to take new decisions in the fight against COVID-19, the organisers of the Tour de France have decided not to unveil the 2021 edition's route at the Palais des Congrès on Thursday, 29th October 2020.
The Tour de France 2021 will instead be presented in detail as a Stade 2 (weekly sports programme) Special with Christian Prudhomme live on France Télévisions on Sunday 1st November. An international programme will also be available simultaneously on all of the official broadcasters' platforms around the world as well as on the Tour de France's official platforms.
L’ÉTAPE DU TOUR DE FRANCE POSTPONED TO 2021
July 28th 2020
After attempting to reschedule the l'Étape du Tour de France on the 6th September, the organisers, in agreement with the City of Nice, have had no choice but to cancel the 2020 edition. In view of the difficulties that many participants had in making themselves available for this date, and in particular the large number of those coming from countries around the world, it has been decided to postpone the L’Étape du Tour de France until 2021, still following the same, long-anticipated route that the 2020 edition would have featured. The City of Nice and the organisers, given the record number of registrations, have indeed made a point of maintaining the organisation of the event in the wonderful backcountry of Nice.
We understand the disappointment of those who have sacrificed much of their time in preparing to ride the 175 km as well as climb the Col de La Colmiane, the Col de Turini and the Col d’Èze. It is only a postponement. The organisers and the City of Nice promise an exceptional Étape du Tour de France in early July 2021.
All of the cyclists entered for this year are, if they wish, automatically entered for the 2021 edition. If not, they will receive a voucher corresponding to the price of the race bib and any options that may have been purchased.

The 3 stages of the Virtual l’Etape du Tour de France (16 sessions spread over each weekend):
4thand 5thJuly, Stage 1: Nice, 29.5 km (682 m of ascent, mountain stage)
11thand 12thJuly, Stage 2: South-West France, 45.8 km (2 x 22.9 km laps, hilly stage)
18thand 19thJuly, Stage 3: Mountain stage, 22.9 km (finish at Chalet-Reynard)
With the Grand Départ of the Tour de France taking place at the end of August, the organisers and the Ville de Nice held a meeting concerning the organisation of the Étape du Tour de France in order to be able to communicate a new date to the numerous participants patiently awaiting its confirmation. As initially planned, the Étape du Tour de France will be the weekend following the Grand Départ, meaning that this year it will be taking place on Sunday 6th September 2020. The Étape du Tour de France will follow the same route as the second stage of the Tour de France, Nice-Nice.
The organisers are closely following the evolving situation and will be respecting any directives from the health authorities, with whom they are working hand in hand.
The riders who are unable to make the new date of September 6th will have the opportunity to choose between participating in the 2021 edition or taking part in another A.S.O. event in 2020 and 2021. The practical information will be communicated to all participants by mid-July.
The definitive date of the event will be communicated by the 30th June
June 5th 2020
The organisers of the Étape du Tour de France 2020 specify that the definitive date of the event will be communicated by the 30th June at the latest. We can’t wait to see you all in Nice as we discover the magnificent southern French landscapes, as a part of the second stage of the Tour de France.
News of L'Étape du Tour de France
June 5th 2020
After a long few months in lockdown, we sincerely hope that all is well with you and those close to you and that you’ve been able to begin readjusting to normality. With a bit of luck, you will have been able to do some sort of physical activity each week during the lockdown. We don’t know about you but we can’t wait for everything to go back to normal so we can put our fruits of our training to the test in a timed course.
As you know, the COVID-19 public health crisis has profoundly impacted sport, on an amateur and professional level. A.S.O. hasn’t been able to organise a public event since the beginning of March. Within this context, on the 7th May, the French Council of Ministers voted for a resolution detailing how we can respond to questions concerning the cancellation of our events. It means that up until the 15th September 2020, we are able to offer you a voucher for a similar event that will be valid for 18 months instead of an immediate refund.
This means that following the cancellation of the L'Etape du Tour de France on the initial date of July 5th, 2020, you will benefit from a voucher with a value equivalent to what you spent on the bib and additional options. You can use this voucher to sign up for more A.S.O. events over a period of 18 months, after which, any unspent funds on the voucher will be refunded to you.
We are currently working very hard to put these vouchers in place for the large number of riders/runners who had been preparing for our events over the last few months. In mid-July, you’ll receive an email specifying the value of your voucher and the practical information on how to claim etc. We regret any inconvenience caused by this exceptional situation and we thank you for your understanding.
In the meantime, we wish you all the best and we can’t wait to see you, even if our priority remains the health of everyone.
We hope to see you soon!
The Etape du Tour de France postponed
April 15th 2020
Following President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement on Monday evening that large-scale public events are banned until mid-July as part of the confinement policy put in place to combat the spread of COVID-19, we regret to inform you that the Étape du Tour de France will not be taking place on its orignal scheduled date, Sunday 5th July.
As the Tour de France is now taking place from the 29th August to the 20th September, we are working hard alongside the Ville de Nice to find a new possible date for the Étape du Tour de France.
We will get back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, we hope that everything is going well for you and those close to you and that you are coping as best you can with this period of confinement that is so essential in the fight against the virus.
We can’t wait to see you and to start training together again.

A rising false flat in the first 50 kilometres will help them to warm up before tackling the first challenge of the day, the Col de la Colmiane. After going over the top, a 20 km descent will give their legs a break prior to climbing the major difficulty of the event, the Col de Turini. Riders will need to leave something in the tank to avoid mistakes in the extremely long descent that will take them back to Nice. Respecting the environment and starting-grids
For the last few weeks, we have been reminding you of the importance of respecting the environment and the incredible landscapes through which the Étape de Tour de France runs through. Following the passage of the closing van, we were delighted to see that the message had been heard and respected. So, we owe you a big THANK YOU! The protection and preservation of the local area is vital to the continuation of the event.
Regarding the starting-grids (essential for the fluidity and safety of the course), 160 riders failed to respect their attributed starting grids and decided to set-off from an earlier starting grid than their own. Those riders have therefore been withdrawn from the official standings.
Thank you to all those who respected the attributed starting grids and we will see you next year!

French riders score a brace in L'Étape du Tour de France
July 21st 2019
Cédrick Dubois and Edwige Pitel take the spoils in Val Thorens
The 29th edition of l'Étape du Tour de France delivered on its promise. 12,760 riders took on the role of pro cyclists this morning to tackle a 135 km course between Albertville and Val Thorens with three climbs, just a week before the peloton of the Tour de France races on the same roads. It was thanks to their grit and steely determination that the amateurs managed to overcome this daunting challenge. There were few surprises in the fight for the win. The French Cédrick Dubois claimed his maiden victory with a beautiful solo move, with Belgian Tim Alleman and another French, Antoine Berlin, taking the other steps on the podium. Meanwhile, the French Edwige Pitel won L'Étape du Tour de France for the fifth time in a row.
Key points:
12,760 riders start the race in Albertville after watching the 1992 Olympic flame be relit for the day
Cédrick Dubois makes up for last year's third place with the win and Edwige Pitel takes her fifth consecutive triumph
The 135 km course featured three climbs, including a 33.5 km colossus before the finish in Val Thorens —the highest one in the history of the race.
A numerous peloton tackled the Col du Méraillet after the first 20 km on the road. The 12 km climb at an average gradient of 7.3% set the stage for the first strategic moves. Leaders who wanted to increase the pace without going too deep into the red started trading pulls at the front of the race, while others hedged their bets and tried to save energy with each pedal stroke. Once at the top, the riders were rewarded with a spectacular view of Roselend Lake prior to tackling the ascent to the Cormet de Roselend.
A hectic pace
After crowning the summit, the leading group that had detached from the rest of the peloton got rid of some lactic acid on the 19 km descent to Bourg-Saint-Maurice Les Arcs before hitting the lower slopes of the Côte de Longefoy at high speed. A stellar Antoine Berlin and the other riders in this group attacked the climb with gusto. Further back, the peloton split into a thousand pieces on the leg-breaking 12.5 km ascent. Next up came the descent to Moûtiers, a tricky, technical sector packed with hairpin turns that had never featured in the race before, but which the favourites navigated without a hitch.
Two bosses and many heroes
The final climb to Val Thorens packed a real punch, with 33.5 km at 5,5%. While other favourites rode conservatively, Cédrick Dubois took matters into his own hands with an attack in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, 20 km before the line. The French, an experienced climber in stellar form, turned on the afterburners to open up a gap of over a minute and, despite Tim Alleman and Antoine Berlin's last-minute effort, he managed to stay clear and take the win in Val Thorens in a time of 4:47:24″. Meanwhile, Edwige Pitel capitalised on her experience to overcome a mechanical and claim her fifth consecutive triumph in the race. The other riders may not have taken the win, but they certainly earned bragging rights. Despite finishing with nothing left in the tank, they all proved their mettle by taming this mammoth climb.

QUOTES
2019 L'Étape du Tour de France winner Cédrick Dubois (FRA):
"I'm very happy. I rolled the dice with a long-range attack. Then I realised they were getting closer, so I sped up and that allowed me to breathe a bit towards the end."
2019 L'Étape du Tour de France winner Edwige Pitel (FRA):
"The race didn't unfold exactly how I expected it to. I had a flat with 15 km to go, so I decided to just keep going. It sure wasn't fun, but it paid off. I'm happy and relieved."

July 10th 2019
We still see too much litter on the roadsides and too many participants engaging in irresponsible behaviour on our roads.
OBJECTIVE: NO WASTE, NO BEAKERS
No beakers will be handed out in the feeding zones from now on. Use your water bottles instead!
And remember:
Do not litter
Use the bag you receive from the organisation to store your waste during the race
Dispose of your waste ONLY in the collection areas set up within the feeding zones
412 members of the organisation will be standing guard on the course to boot out of the race any participant caught disposing of waste outside these collection areas. Riders caught littering will be disqualified!

If you have not already noticed, we would like to remind you that your race number is now available in yourtime topersonal space. All the participants have been ranked by skill level to ensure good race conditions, fluidity and safety on the race route.

M-3: DISCOVER THE TRAINING PROGRAMME THAT WILL TAKE YOU ALL THE WAY TO VAL THORENS
April 24th 2019
14 weeks of preparation to cross the finish line!
With this guide created with theFrench Cycling Federation, we offer a 14-weektraining programme divided in 3 periods: the first month focuses on velocity, the second on strength and the third on power.
Each week has 3 sessions:
A session to work on fundamentals,
A long-intensity session,
A session dedicated to climbing.
So, no more excuses to begin training and be ready on July 21.
At Moûtiers, take the time to recover and have something to eat in the feed zone because the climb towards Val Thorens that will follow will be clearly THE challenge of this day! This is undoubtedly one of the longest climbs in France with 33.4 km (5.5%) in the Vallée des Bellevilles. Once back on the bike, you will very quickly arrive at the foot of the climb that will lead you to the highest altitude ski resort in Europe, with a climb in three legs:
The early 11km portion of the pass will be one of the hardest sections with a 6.9% gradient on a secondary road parallel to the main one, but on the other side. You will pass through Saint-Laurent-de-la-Côte (1 030m), in a forest.
After returning to the main road, you will attack the second portion in the middle of a cleared landscape. This section is 11km long with a 4.7% gradient and a few flat sections in the local villages. It will take you to the Menuires ski resort (1,745 masl). Here again, a 2km flat section will allow you to take a short breather before the final portion. Note that there will be a feed zone in the heart of the climb in the town of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville (1 417 masl).
Once you have gone through Les Menuires, you only have 9.5km to go (6.5% gradient) before the finish line. You will cross and pass the Val Thorens Ski resort to reach the summit at 2,365 masl.
Following the long downhill ride to Bourg-Saint-Maurice Les Arcs and a transition in the Tarentaise valley just until Mâcot-La-Plagne, the 2nd difficulty of the day will take you on a new route and a new climb in the history of the Tour de France: the 6.7km Côte de Longefoy (1190 masl) with a 6.8% gradient, which is a short but intense ascent extended to Notre-Dame-Du-Pré (1310 masl).
Once at the summit, you will have to remain cautious on the very technical 9.5km descent to Moûtiers (539 masl), which will feature more than 20 hairpin turns.
One of the wildest and most spectacular passes of the Alps!
At 1,968 metres above sea level, the Cormet de Roselend is a Tour de France fixture. This summer, it will greet the peloton for the 12th time in the history of the Tour. Warren Barguil passed the summit with the lead on Stage 11 between Albertville and La Rosière, but Geraint Thomas eventually crossed the finish line first.
A slight climb from Albertville will take you to this 19.9km ascension (6%) will be composed of two portions. After a taste of the wind at the feeding zone of Beaufort (721 masl), you will set off on a 12km climb (7%) on a lovely road where you will encounter a series of hairpin turns in a pine forest. This hard but consistent climb will lead you to the Col du Méraillet pass (1 604 masl).
A 2km flat section will let you catch your breath. During this time, don’t forget to take in the extraordinary scenery of Lake Roselend, before the 5.7km ramp (6.5%).
Once you reach the summit of the Cormet de Roselend, enjoy the refreshments and regain energy to take on the long downhill ride that will lead you to Bourg-Saint-Maurice Les Arcs (812 masl). While the first section will be relatively easy, stay vigilant form km52 where the road narrows, with a sequence of hairpin turns.
For the 29th edition of l’Étape du Tour, you will take a preview on July 21 of the route designed between Albertville and Val Thorens for the 20th stage of the Tour de France.
We look forward to seeing you at an altitude of 2,365 metres to cross the highest finish line in the history ofl’Étape du Tour. You will have to cover a distance of 135 kilometres, with a total positive altitude difference of 4,563 metres before you can enjoy your finisher beer.

Relive you Étape du Tour in video with Mavic!
July 10th 2018
Your Étape du Tour has been recorded by several HD video cameras positioned at the summit of the Col de la Croix Fry, the Col de Romme and the Col de la Colombière as well as on the finish line.
Sunday was a very emotional day, whose keynote was surpassing yourself. Sportograf photographers were posted along the whole route, you must have seen them: we’re allowing to relive your exploit in photos.
They did it! Each one riding at a different pace, they tackled the 169 km course, the four timed climbs and the Glières Plateau. The 28th edition of the Étape du Tour was held today. It was the perfect event for the 12,993 participants from 67 countries eager to ride on a course worthy of the pro peloton. The champions also had lots of fun, including Victor Lafay, who won the race ahead of Colombia's Óscar Eduardo Tovar Rivera and Cédrick Dubois.
Key points
Victor Lafay takes the men's race and Edwige Pitel wins the women's event
A 169 km course featuring four timed climbs
An elevation gain of 4000 m
At the start of the race, after a 40 km detour around Lake Annecy and clearing a few minor difficulties, the amateur peloton tackled the long and consistent col de la Croix Fry. A few riders were already out of the saddle and pushing the pedals at a high tempo, while others tried to save some energy by riding at a lower cadence. The favourites were still together.
The next course on the menu was the dreaded col des Glières, a six-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 11.2% that turned the screws on the peloton. A flurry of attacks at the front changed the race situation and caused several splits on the Glières Plateau. This section, which included a 1.8 km stretch of unpaved road and had never featured in the race before, made quite an impression on the riders.
Meanwhile, at the front of the race, Jean-Lou Paiani got a gap on the descent from Les Glières and pushed on alone until the foot of the Col de Romme. However, a well-organised chase put paid to his hopes and dreams before the summit of the climb. Scenes of solidarity unfolded in the peloton of L'Étape du Tour, as riders tried to counter the sizzling conditions in the Arve Valley as well as the first cramps.
Victor Lafay proved strongest on the final climb of the day, the Col de la Colombière, and plunged towards Le Grand-Bornand after crowning the mountain on his own. He claimed a solo victory after 5 h 15′ of intense effort. Edwige Pitel took her fourth straight win in the women's race with a time of 5 h 47′. Behind the champions, the last metres of the Col de la Colombière seemed to last forever for all the riders who were biting their handlebars and praying for the summit to arrive. Once at the top, they let gravity do the job on the 12 km descent and cross the finishing line with a proud expression on their faces.
Amateur cyclists tackled a total elevation gain of 4000 m, a challenge some of them are already looking forward to repeating next year.

Discover the route
We invite you to the shores of Lake Annecy for an expedition across the mountains that takes you to the nearby resort of Le Grand-Bornand... after some rather challenging detours.
After battling your way up the Col de la Croix-Fry, where you are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the Aravis mountains, you'll then embark on the 7-km climb to the Plateau des Glières at an average gradient of 11%. You’ll be confronted not only with the steep slope but also the dust on a 1.5-Km portion of untarmacked road before you reach the plateau where members of the local resistance used to hide during the Second World War. This is followed by a hard slog up to the Col de Romme, then the Col de la Colombière, the latter perched at 1,613 metres above sea level.
The total elevation gain for the day is over 4,000 metres: the final downhill to Le Grand-Bornand is the well-earned reward for all your hard work…

24 hours before L’Étape du Tour 2017
July 15th 2017
In a few hours, you'll be setting off from Briançon for the 181-km Etape du Tour, following exactly the same route as the 18th stage of the 2017 Tour de France. You have reached the end of several months of preparation and your equipment is ready to tackle the awesome climbs of the Cols du Var and the Col d’Izoard. Your family, friends and the public are all there to encourage you, and the event organisers are pulling out all the stops to make sure that it is an outstanding experience for you, as you ride the same route as the Tour de France legends.
Preparing for the start
With the race number that you will have collected at the Etape de Tour Village, you're fully prepared for the start in Briançon on Sunday 16th July. The 16 starting areas in this 2017 edition will be open to participants from 6 am. Your race number indicates which area you start from (starting area 0 for race numbers from 1 to 999, starting area 1 for race numbers from 1000 to 1999, etc.), as well as your access time to the start zone and your exact start time.
You must have all the required safety equipment when you set off on the course. We remind you that helmets are compulsory on L’Etape du Tour. Don't forget water bottles and energy bars to complement the food and drink stocks at the feeding stations.
All the excitement of the village
The Etape du Tour Village will be set up for three days in Briançon with plenty of entertainment and activities on offer and 70 professional exhibitors who are there to give you advice and exclusive offers on cycling equipment.
Briançon, the highest town in Europe (1,326 m above sea level), is playing host to the village of l'Étape du Tour, which will open its doors today for three days of activities and celebrations. More than 30,000 visitors — participants of the 2017 edition, families, friends and many spectators — are expected to enjoy the Tour experience, meet the 70 or so exhibitors allowing them to take advantage of their passion for cycling and discover the specialities offered by local producers.
Celebrating the Tour
Like every year, l'Étape du Tour is the occasion for its participants and the public to experience the legend of the Big Loop (Tour de France). An exhibition of jerseys and objects will allow them to (re) discover the history of the Tour. A virtual reality device will allow thrillseekers to be immersed into the heart of the peloton. A Tour podium, set up in the village, will give them the possibility of wearing the renowned yellow jersey and capturing this unique moment. And a giant screen will broadcast the daily stage of the professionals on the Tour de France live.
A dedicated area will allow you to collect your race number, the plate to be placed on your bike and the timing system (chip) on Friday 14th July from 10am to 8pm and on Saturday 15th July from 10am to 8pm (no race numbers can be collected on Sunday, the day of the race). To obtain the items that are essential for your participation, you must present your notification letter, a proof of identity and a medical certificate dated no earlier than a year before the day of the race, stating that you are fit to take part in competitive cycling events.
The big day is approaching, your legs are already raring to go and you’re really looking forward to just one thing: setting off to tackle the 181km and both passes, the Col de Vars and the Col d’Izoard! 5 days before your achievement, it’s high time to prepare your stay in Briançon to avoid any unnecessary stress on the big day! This will be the case for Edwige Pitel (2016 French Women’s Road Race Champion and second in the time-trial in June) who won the 2015 edition of L'Étape de Tour as well as Sophie Evrard (the 2015 winner of the World Master Championships) and Magda de Saint Jean (bronze medal winner at the 2011 French Championships), who are representatives of Green Cycling.
Admission to the Étape de Tour Village is free of charge and open to everyone on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th July from 10am to 8pm. 75 exhibitors are present in the village located on the Côte 2000 site (3461 route de la Côte 2000) in Megève. A 4,000 place car park, located at the Altiport, is at the disposal of visitors who must ensure they don’t block traffic by parking on the slope leading to the Côte 2000.

As it was announced at the beginning of the week, the peloton of L'Etape du Tour will not take the Col de la Ramaz.
As the organisers, we are obviously very disappointed that we can’t offer you this magnificent route in its entirety, but the préfecture of Haute-Savoie has made the right decision. It wasn’t conceivable to allow 15,000 cyclists take a route where there was a risk of a landslide.
Nevertheless, the Col des Aravis, the Col de la Colombière and the Col de Joux-Plane will be serious contenders.
The Avoriaz Challenge
However, if the 122km and the 2,800m of elevation gains of L’Etape du Tour leave you wanting more, we suggest that you tackle the Col d’Avoriaz, i.e. an additional 14-km climb, just like Andy Schleck, on a beautiful summer day in 2010.
This climb will not be timed, but the organisers will set up water outlets on the different car parks along the ascent in order rehydrate yourself and allow you to climb the additional 840 metres. We advise those who want to take up this challenge to park their car in one of the car parks in Avoriaz.
Timing
L’Etape du Tour boasts a timing system allowing your sporting level to be revealed as precisely as possible.
Like every year, you will be detected on the start line (Megève) as well on the finish line (Morzine). The general ranking as well as your average speed will be calculated between these two points.
All the climbs will be timed and give rise to an additional scratch ranking called the “King of the Mountains challenge”. The first three riders in the scratch ranking will win their race number for the 2017 edition L’Etape du Tour.
For several weeks, part of the route of L’Etape du Tour was at risk due to falling rocks level with the descent of the Col de la Ramaz.
We hoped that we could offer you an unmodified route, identical to the one announced when the registrations were launched.
However, the competent authorities and the organisers believe it is preferable to not take the Col de la Ramaz. Although the area has been secured for motorized traffic with automatic traffic lights which are activated in the event that rocks fall, the passage of 15,000 cyclists for several hours represents an additional risk.
Nevertheless the modified route will represent a major sporting challenge: 122km and 2,873m of elevation gains.
The start times haven’t been modified. You can find the sporting information that has been updated in the different sections of the website.
For the 20th stage of the Tour de France, which will be held on 23rd July, 10 days after l'Etape du Tour, a decision will be made the day before it takes place, according to how the situation has evolved.
The Fédération Française de Cyclisme (FFC) acknowledges the UCI’s position about the use of disc brakes in mass participation events, recalls that their use is forbidden in professional road races and requests the implementation of a safety procedure to avoid accidents.
The FFC and its Conseil Fédéral (Federal Council) acknowledge the decision of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) authorising the use of disc brakes in mass participation events.
The decision, made by the Union Cycliste Internationale, during its Management Committee, on 2nd and 3rd June in Lausanne, is as follows:
“In the area of equipment, the UCI Management Committee approved a clarification to its regulations to make it clear that the use of disc brakes – already widespread – is authorised in mountain bike, trials and mass participation (road) events. These clarified rules are applicable with immediate effect. Their use in events on the international or national road race calendars remains suspended at the request of the Association des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels (AIGCP), supported by the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA).”
The Fédération Française de Cyclisme recalls that the use of disc brakes is forbidden in all professional road races. The FFC’s Conseil Féderal (Federal Council), which met on 17th and 18th June, requests the implementation of safety and protective measures aimed at safeguarding the physical integrity of athletes.
