Ready to become part of Tour de France history? On July 19, your final climb at L’Étape du Tour de France will take you to the Col de Sarenne, which you will have the privilege of riding just six days before its very first passage in this direction in Tour de France history. A rare opportunity to ride in the tracks of the professionals and discover a road that remains largely unknown to the general public.
So far, the Col de Sarenne has only been used once in the Tour de France, back in 2013, during the legendary stage featuring the double ascent of Alpe d’Huez and its famous 21 hairpin bends. That stage remains one of the most memorable of recent Tour history, with the peloton crossing the summit of Sarenne in the opposite direction to the one you will experience this summer. Since then, the climb has become something of a hidden gem for cycling enthusiasts, full of memories and history.
With its 12.8 km at an average gradient of 7.3%, the Col de Sarenne promises to be a true sporting challenge. Right from the opening kilometres, the climb sets the tone with a particularly demanding first kilometre at 9.5%. A slightly easier section then offers riders the chance to settle into their rhythm and enjoy the spectacular scenery surrounding the climb, before a much tougher finale featuring nearly 3 kilometres close to 10%. An irregular, demanding and wild ascent that will require both careful pacing and determination.
But beyond the sporting challenge, what awaits is above all a unique experience. The Col de Sarenne crosses an exceptional natural environment in the heart of a protected Alpine area. In order to preserve the beauty and tranquillity of this remarkable site, no spectators will be allowed on this section and only a limited number of official vehicles will be permitted access. A rare immersion into authentic mountain scenery, far from the usual crowds and atmosphere of major cycling events.
For a few kilometres, it will simply be you, the road, the silence and the vast Alpine landscapes around you. An almost timeless experience that will make this ascent much more than just another climb: a special moment reserved for those ready to take on the challenge.
